Set SMART goals

The main reason most people drop goals, including New Year's resolutions, is that most people do not know how to define them sufficiently for them to stick. A SMART goal needs to be Specific, Measureable, Achievable (or acceptable), Realistic (or reasonable) and has a timescale. For example, "I'm going to begin to recycle all my plastic bottles, cans and magazines by Friday " is a much more achievable goal than "I'm going to do more for the environment" and that makes it easier to stick with. Many people describe themselves as good at starting things though they are less skilled at follow through. Goal setting is a core skill that helps the more successful business people to keep up momentum when delivering initiatives.

Your new strengths and abilities

  • Appreciating the reasons that many people allow their goals fail whilst others succeed.
  • Setting goals that are motivational rather than a chore.
  • Understanding the role of the subconscious in effective goal setting.
  • Establishing links to your own up-to-date 'values'.
  • Creating 'visions' of success.
  • Making it easier to follow through with projects and initiatives to their successful conclusion.
